First Day

Hey Everyone.
We are in Edinburgh! Let me tell you, it is crazy how much changes by leaving the country. Simple things that you would never think about such as how to order from a restaurant! We got into the city yesterday at about 6:00 and we took a three hour walking tour of New Town (built in the 1700's i think!) and Old Town which consists of Edinburgh Castle and the land surrounding it where the peasants used to live. The castle would have been well fortified when it was functioning as a castle-- there were so many places that gates used to be. Our walking tour got us there in time to hear the traditional gunfire at 1:00 (it used to be fired at 1 to tell the ships in port what time it was in the city -- you know, all before time was a consistent thing wherever you went).
The city itself is beautiful. There are stone buildings everywhere and it's amazing to think about how old the city is. Scottish history is such a rich history and it's been great just to be in it. Some of us also visited the Scottish Museum which was fantastic. Not only did they have Scottish artwork which was fabulous, they also had a few paintings by Van Gogh, C. Monet and Raphael. We stay in Edinburgh until Monday and then we jet down to the Lake District in England where we'll be for the next week or so.
Our next stop for today is group dinner in the city and then probably will crash tonight when we finally make it home. I have to stop by Boots (I'm thinking about you, Sara Congdon!) to pick up a few things that I forgot at home on my way back. As always, never fear, I have well over a hundred pictures from our traveling tour today! :) I hope you all are well back in the States.

How fun! I love Edinburgh so much. Make sure to try HAGGIS! You'll probably hate it, but you have to get the full Scottish experience! Are you guys going to see the Lochs at all?

A 3 hour walking tour on your first day?! I remember when I went to Switzerland we got there early in the morning (Swiss time) and our hosts gave us an ALL DAY tour of Geneva. They said the best way to get on their time was to be outside and explore the city. They also made us go hiking on our second day as we tried to recover from jet lag. Ugh. I hated them those first few days. Haha.

Glad to hear you're still alive. How's all that jet lag treating you?

You better sip some single malt while you're in Scotland. Get one from Speyside, like The Macallan. Which, by the way, if you happen to stop by the distillery pick me up a bottle of the "Winter Cask Selection 2006" that is only sold at the gift shop in the distillery. My friendship should be worth like $150, right? Hmm, maybe you could find someone to go halfsies with you...
